After LAPD officer Harry Marburg is shot in the stockroom of the Clune Galleries, the owner, Francis Clune, is suspected of the crime and the police are obviously out to get him. The officer was there investigating an art theft which Clune said he reported to the police. Lt. Drumm and Sgt. Deke Bradley, to whom Marburg reported, tell Perry Mason that no such call was ever made to them. At a new gallery opening, Clune's assistant, Bobbi Dane, is nearly kidnapped by two thugs but is injured and subsequently disappears from her hospital room. At the same time, Paul has gone to work for Olaf Deering, who runs a trucking firm that has had three hijackings of trucks with expensive cargo. He drives a rig on a secret route but an attempt is still made to steal his truck and cargo. When Clune and Bobbi are charged with Marburg's murder, it's up to Perry to find the connection with the series of truck hijackings and stolen art from the San Francisco area. After a car crash results in the death of a truck driver and severe injuries to his wife, Frances, art critic Philip Stark moves into a new home in Los Angeles. His wife is bedridden and he is pleased when art student Betty Kaster drops by and he quickly offers her a job as a caregiver for Frances. She is convinced that he is out to kill his wife and goes to see Della, who she had met when Della gave a seminar at her school, to ask about reciprocal wills. When introduced to Perry, she changes her mind and leaves the office. On the street, when she sees Philip kissing an attractive blond, she becomes seriously concerned and rushes home. There she receives a call from Perry who, based on some calls he made, is concerned. It all takes an interesting twist when Betty finds Philip dead in Frances' bed with the recovering woman nowhere to be found.
